Research Infrastructures (RIs)
Research infrastructures (RIs) are organised systems of laboratories, large-scale scientific equipment, resources, data and advanced services made available to the scientific community and, under specific access conditions, to businesses and other public and private bodies. They support excellence in research, innovation, training and technology transfer. Depending on their strategic relevance, RIs may be recognised at regional level, within regional research and innovation policies; at national level, through the National Research Infrastructure Plan (PNIR); or at European level, through inclusion in the ESFRI Roadmap or establishment as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). These levels are complementary and reflect the different territorial, scientific and organisational scope of each infrastructure.
Research infrastructures with UniBa participation
The University of Bari Aldo Moro takes part in research infrastructures and networks of regional, national and European relevance, contributing scientific expertise, laboratories, technologies and advanced services. Participation in these initiatives fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, shared access to resources and the development of research, innovation and technology transfer activities.
ELIXIR
(contact: Prof. Graziano Pesole)
ELIXIR is the European infrastructure for biological and bioinformatics data. Through its national node, ELIXIR Italy, it brings together computing resources, databases, bioinformatics tools, expertise and training activities to support life-science research. The University of Bari is part of the Italian node, contributing to the development and delivery of advanced scientific services. Visit the ELIXIR Italy website.
METROFOOD-RI
(contact: Prof. Sabina Tangaro)
METROFOOD-RI is the European infrastructure for metrology and open data in the agri-food sector. It supports food quality and safety, production traceability, sustainability and the digitalisation of agri-food systems. Within the national node METROFOOD-IT, the University of Bari contributes interdisciplinary expertise, analytical technologies, data and digital solutions. Visit the METROFOOD-RI website.
GeoSciences IR
(contact: Prof. Vincenzo Festa)
GeoSciences IR is a digital infrastructure for sharing and updating geological knowledge of Italy. It brings together data, applications, virtual laboratories and cloud services to support Earth Science research, land monitoring, the study of georesources and the prevention of geological hazards. Visit the GeoSciences IR website.
MEET – Monitoring Earth’s Evolution and Tectonics
(contact: Prof. Andrea Tallarico)
MEET is an initiative coordinated by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) to strengthen Earth observation networks and systems. It integrates infrastructures, sensors and laboratories for the study of Earth dynamics, seismicity, volcanism and geophysical phenomena, improving the production, sharing and use of scientific data. Visit the MEET website.
CTAO and the CTA+ project
(contact: Prof. Francesco Giordano)
The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) is the international infrastructure for observing the Universe through very-high-energy gamma rays. The CTA+ project supports its expansion through new telescopes, detection technologies and research and development activities. The University of Bari takes part in the project together with INAF, INFN and other universities and research bodies. Visit the CTA+ website.
GATB – Grottaglie Airport Test Bed
(contact: Prof. Francesco Giordano)
The Grottaglie Airport Test Bed is a research and testing infrastructure for the development and validation of unmanned aircraft systems, autonomous flight technologies and air traffic management services. Located at Grottaglie Airport, it combines flight-test facilities, laboratories and advanced monitoring systems. The University of Bari contributes to its development and implementation together with the Aerospace Technology District (DTA) and the other university partners in the Apulia region. Visit the Grottaglie Airport Test Bed website.
